Chemo Cap – Free Pattern for Loom

Chemo CapChemo Cap

Loom knit a pretty chemo cap easily and quickly with this free pattern. The key here is the yarn. By having a bulky weight yarn the project can be finished a lot faster and the end result is a soft hat that breathes well and is warm without being itching. Also works well for people suffering any form of Alopecia.

Cancer patients have a few unique needs when it comes to hats. If you want to make one that is not just appreciated for your kind intentions but for the practical use of the gift I want you to have not just a FREE pattern but some important information.

Chemo CapThe Yarn

I have used the Caron Simply Soft yarn for most of my chemo caps. It is an amazingly soft product. However, I recently discovered Lion Brand’s Quick and Cozy yarn and I am so hooked. No pun intended.

The specifications: 100 % Nylon, 55 yards (50m), Weight Category  6 Bulky, No bleach, Hand wash

Chemo CapsThe Colors

There are colors that represent different types of cancer. The average person knows that pink is the color that represents breast cancer but did you know that there is a color for brain cancer?

I created a chart. The color doesn’t need to be exact. Coming close to the representative color is one more effort you make to show that you are aware and that you care.

    Hi Denise,

I am having a hard time finding the Lion Brand Quick and Cozy yarn. Where do you usually buy it? They did not have it at JoAnn, Mochael’s, or AC Moore. I was able to find the Caron Simply Soft at Michael’s, so I’ll use that for now. Having a little “class” tonight with a former student and her mom to learn to knit chemo caps for a local charity. So excited 🙂

When I have a hard time finding a particular yarn – I go to eBay – Amazon or Etsy

Once ACMoore stopped carrying it, I have been buying it straight from the LionBrand website, watching for when it is on clearance.

Thanks for the free pattern and valuable info!
I am trying this pattern for the first time. Is the knit stitch for the body of the hat flat stitch or e-wrap?

    • Denise Canela April 13, 2015 at 9:19 pm

Hi Stephanie, the Flat stitch is only for the cast on.

Hi Denise, I just found your website and am so thankful for it and your gift to all of us in doing it! My question is: In making the chemo cap are you using one or two working threads? I am brand-new to this craft, but really excited about it. Thank you so much.

    • Denise Canela November 4, 2013 at 8:23 pm

Hi Sally, Thanks sooooooo much for your kind words. My hat was made using a chunky yarn (5). If you use a loom like a Knifty Knitter and a yarn like a worsted weight (4) or thinner you need to use two strands.
      Hope that helps

Yes, thank you, it helps. After a little more practice, I am hoping to make one for my dad.
