Hi, I have a set of 4 looms and for my first project I would love to knit hats for premature babies, but the smallest one I have is 24 pegs which is recommended, but it still looks way too big.
    Any advice?..
    Thanks so much

    • Denise Canela May 18, 2020 at 11:56 am Reply

Julie that loom is fine depending on the stitch you use. If you do a rib stitch it will have more flexibility in sizing. A rib stitch is made up of 1 knit and then 1 purl continue for the desired length.

I recently tried out the double ewrap stitch and combined it with another stitch that I learned from you and it made a rik raj type of look. I adore this. Thank you much!!!!

Back in the 70s, I used to make afghans on a 5-6″ loom. You wound the yarn around the loom to make flowers separately. When finished, you crocheted them together into a afghan. I would like the directions to make these again. Any help?

You can knit squares on the 5 inch / 24-peg loom and sew them together

Karyn – make sure you’re not using baby yarn – it’s too thin and I now use a different technique for the heel called a German Shortrow.

Hi Andreas. One single loom does not answer that question because it really depends on the pattern – what stitches are used. Here is an example of a hat made on a loom with a single strand of yarn – Click HERE.

Yeah – the knit stitch is the purl on the reverse and the purl is the knit

    Hello Denise!

Thanks for all your videos and ideas.

I have seen the wicker stitch in only a couple of YouTube videos and they are all on needles. I don’t think this stitch is proprietary and I would love to see it on the loom.

Pattern on needles (2 row repeat):
    Cast on odd number
Row 1 (right side) – Slip, *KTBL the 2nd stitch, don’t drop the stitch, KTBL the 1st stitch, drop both stitches. *repeat till end of the row
Row 2 (Wrong side) – Slip, *P the 2nd stitch, don’t drop it, P the 1st stitch, drop both stitches. *repeat till end of the row

I know that KTBL is eWrap and the Row 2 purls are knits on the loom. I have tried and tried and I just cannot get it to work.

    Thanks,
    William

    Denise,
I am blind, so I use the written instructions instead of the videos. I am working on the drawstring cast-on, and when I used my flower loom and scrap yarn, I was able to pull the piece closed. However, when I tried it with my 31-peg loom, I could not cinch the piece closed. I’m not quite sure what I’m doing wrong. By the way, I want to thank you for writing out instructions for those of us who can’t see the pictures and the technique in the videos. I was thinking about starting a blog or something that gives detailed instructions on doing various crafts, but with a ton of information specifically geared toward people who can’t see. For example, I could write something like, “Stitch X feels like Y on the right side, and like Z on the wrong side.” Any thoughts on my idea to start a blog for visually impaired crafters?

    • Denise Canela January 5, 2019 at 11:33 am Reply

Hi Bethany – thank YOU – written instead of video was not something I had considered as better. People are always asking for videos. It’s always GREAT to get feedback with a different prospective. Please let me know of any other ways I can improve to meet the needs of the blind community. Really, I soooo appreciate it. I have some videos I will need to go back to -great to know. As for the drawstring – the more fabric you have the harder it is to close. That’s why the higher peg count makes it more difficult. After you cast-off thread a need with the working yarn and feed it through the cast-off. You will need to sew in a circle and then pull, sew in a circle and then pull, might take about 2-3 rounds to close completely – but it will close.

Thank you for all the wonderful loom-knitting videos. I have a question. I have decided to loom knit scarves for “Operation Gratitude”. They pack boxes full of goodies for our Soldiers deployed. They ask for scarves measuring 4inches wide x 36 inches long. I’ve loom knitted 2 scarves over 36″ inches. How do I calculate how many rows for 36″ inches long? Is there a math formula? I was thinking of using a 36″ long string tied to the loom. I loom knitted the two scarves using your no curl garter stitch/video. I’m using two balls of yarn, #4 worsted weight yarn. Any suggestions will be helpful. Thank You,

    • Denise Canela April 21, 2017 at 7:46 pm Reply

Hi Irene – depending on your stitch, you yarn, your loom and your particular style of knitting – it should be approximately 5 rows per inch for the garter stitch scarf. I would suggest making a swatch.

I have been making Izzy (aka Comfort) Dolls on a 12 peg flower loom. They are shipped away to go to refugee children.

    Here’s my process:
Working around, one peg at a time, I wrap the yarn around each peg, move to the next, etc. I repeat the process 9 times, then cast over the first 8 rows. If using two strands of yarn, I wrap 5 times, and cast the first 4 (which would still be 8 strands) over.

I have watched several videos, and it seems that the casting over is done after each strand. If I do that the weaving is away too loose and there are holes in the product.

To make a complete doll, here’s the process:
Shoes: 3 rows of 8 strands per row
Pants: 6 rows of 8 strands her row
Shirt: 5 rows of 8 strands per row
Face: 6 rows of 8 strands per row
Hat: 3 rows of 8 strands per row

All told, it takes about 3 hours to loom a doll.

Can anyone suggest a different way of going about this?

    Thanks.
    Tom

    • Denise Canela June 28, 2016 at 11:12 pm Reply

      Tom,
I have NO idea what videos you have been watching. The pattern and techniques sound all wrong. Are you loom knitting your dolls?

I don’t know of anyone other then me doing the comfort doll on a loom video: Click HERE
      I don’t use a 12 peg loom – I use the 24-peg loom
      I don’t use the e-wrap stitch – I use the u-Wrap.
      I don’t use 8 strands – I only use 1

The reason you have holes is because you “Wrap” the peg. I’m using a U-Wrap – and 3 hours is just about right – the more proficient you become the easier.

Take a look a the video completely before you start the project:

I’d love to know how to attach your comfort dolls to a small loomed or crocheted blanket. I’d welcome any suggestions you have about how to secure the dolls to the blankets in a tight, yet attractive manner. I love your site and youtube videos…they were my first intro. to looming and they continue to be my favorite…and I’ve referred several friends to both as well as your FB page. Hi Peg,

Thanks for this info, I’ve been wanting to know the name of this project. I’ve seen them before but they were always labeled as just blankets. This is why I LOVE questions – they help everybody. 🙂

From my research the little heads are not attached they are part of the blanket. Once you finished the blanket you fold it and stuff (with cotton or poly-fil) and sew the middle forming the little head. This is the simplest way of making them. to attach a bulky item to the blanket after its made is a pain because it’s never really well secured enough for a baby or small child. I am considering this for a later time – just not sure when.

About the Tunisian crochet.. I never say never so I’ll say that I probably won’t be crocheting in the near future. Knitting with a loom is just easier for me – for now.

Hello: Just wanted to thank you for your time and expertise you give us loom knitters that need tips and information from pros like yourself. Have you considered doing a video for Mary Jane adult slippers made on a loom? I have seen lots of videos for babies but not adults. I have seen a couple of written patterns for these slippers, but the instructions are lacking. Would love to see a video for making a nice pair of Mary Jane’s. Thanks again for all that you do.

About a week and a half ago I had a package shipped to you containing approximately 30 caps/hats of various sizes. I am confined to a wheelchair, so I had someone else mailed the package and am unsure of what day it was sent. I would like to know if you received the package and, if so, are my items the correct size? I would like to make more hats and caps, but I need to know if I need to adjust the number of rows on any of the hats or caps. Thank you.
