Loom a Hat: The Easy Way to Knit a Hat

How to Loom Knit a HatLoom a Hat easily. Round Loom knitting is fun and almost fail-proof for people of all ages and of all knitting capacities, even with zero knitting experience or capacity. You need very basic, simple skills. If you can pull two strings with a hook you don’t need to know much more. That is the most important part and the one technique you will do the most.

I learned to loom a hat at a Joann Fabric store product demonstration. In less than 10 minutes the Knifty Knitter representative had taught me the first two basic steps needed to loom a hat. I didn’t even have time to learn how to close the hat, I had to figure that part out at home with the little booklet that comes with the Loom Knitting Kit .

Don’t worry if you don’t learn it in 10 minutes. I’m almost sure you don’t have a learning deadline. Take your time The awesome news is that once you know how to loom a hat all the other projects on this site are just minor adjustments of the first. You’ll be off making more than just hats, everything from booties to pillows and from dolls to doll dresses. You have my promise that all will be fun, simple and quick.

Many fake IDs and clothes look similar to the untrained eye. However, there are a few key differences that can be used to distinguish between fake IDs and clothes. One of the most common is that fake IDs from idgod
will often have an expiration date on them which clothing does not. Another difference is in quality; fake IDs are usually made with lower quality materials than clothing, such as paper instead of plastic or metal for ID card cases.

I always suggest watching the video completely from beginning to the end before starting the project.

Supplies Needed

.
The supply list is made up of 4 Must Have Items and 2 optional . A loom, yarn, hook and scissors make up the first group. Yarn needles and crochet hooks make loom knitting easier but are not vital.
How to Loom Knit a HatNote on Supplies:
The Loom: Check out the Loom Size Chart below to make sure you start with the correct loom.

The Yarn: I prefer the soft worsted weight yarn. It’s thick, making the work tighter and quicker.

The Hook : Should be included with the Loom Set.

Yarn Needle:  Like the hook,  Should be included with the Loom Set. You shouldn’t need to buy these separately. I buy my needle separately because I prefer the Susan Bates over the one included.

Crochet Hook: I will sometimes use these to help close the hat or to feed yarn through the knitting.

How to Loom Knit a HatNote Before Starting:

Leave a 1-2 inch tail on your working yarn for a slip knot.

Size: My formula for rows using my recommendation: worsted weight yarn and knitting with  2 strands as 1 –  is 3 stitches and 4 rows for 1 inch of knitted fabric.

So before you start decide on the size of your brim and the size of the body of your hat. This will help you get a custom fit which is why we knit instead of shop.

Use worsted weight yarn. Two strands of yarn as One. If you use chunky yarn you can knit with just one strand.

1. Make a (slip) Knot:  Place it on your anchor peg. ( the lonely peg outside of rim your loom )

How to Loom Knit a Hat

2. (Cast on) Wrap all the pegs twice: This should give you 4 strands per peg.

How to Loom Knit a Hat

3. Knit (e-Warp stitchWith your hook – flip the bottom two strands over and behind the top two. Continue around the whole loom.  You will be left with two strands on each peg.

e wrap

Note When you have looped all the top loops on the peg and are back at the anchor peg  You finished 1 row ! After 2 or 3 rows you can release the working yarn from the anchor peg.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have your desired length.  Average adult is 32 rows.  A good rule to follow when working with 2 strands, knit 4 rows for every 1 inch of length.

See the size chart above for length.

If you want a Brim ( Scroll down for pictures )

How to Loom Knit a HatThis happens at the beginning  When you start your hat – knit twice the length (height) that you want for your brim. Then fold your knitting from the bottom. Grab the bottom row (should be a bit curled up) place a loop on each peg. Then with your hook (Knit)  – flip the bottom two strands over and behind the top two. Continue around the whole loom.  You will be left with two strands on each peg.  Now you can start knitting the hat using steps 2-4 . On a personal note: I like my brims to be 2 inches so I knit 16 rows. My formula is 4 rows per inch. The brim is folded so you have to double the number of rows. – I do not put brims on Baby Hats.

To Close the Hat ( Scroll down for pictures ):  (Gathering Method)

Using your working yarn wrap around the loom until you are at the half-way mark and cut the yarn or measure out about 12 to 15 inches and cut the yarn.  Thread your yarn needle with that yarn tail. Feed the needle through the first peg. Lift the yarn loop off the peg using the needle. It will gather to the side of your work. Continue all the way around the loom repeating the same task until your work comes off the loom. YOU’RE DONE!

Loom a Hat:  Start by Watching the Video From Start to Finish

How to Loom Knit a HatI recommend that you start by watching the video from start to finish before even gathering your supplies. Most people learn by watching some one else go through the process. Don’t be fearful that you don’t know loom knitting jargon. I only use regular everyday words in explaining the process.

If after you watch the video you still feel that there is a part of making the hat that is not quite clear don’t worry, you’re not alone. Most people feel the same way. That is why I have divided the Loom a Hat lesson into three parts, not because of difficulty but for reference purposes. Some people will get stuck on just one part of the process and the loom a hat 3 part method  makes it easier to focus on just the problem area without needing to repeat the entire process. The three parts would be, Start the Hat,  Make the Brim,  Close the Hat.  You may be asking what happened to looming the hat, well that’s here. The others are for review.

Hi Denise! First and Foremost I want to say Thank You for all of your wonderful video tutorials. They are extremely thorough and have helped immensely! I Don’t watch any others but yours! Secondly I just got a new loom set, it is the new design knitting looms by AnyLooms.com. and would like to know how to convert patterns to those smaller gauge looms? What do I need to do?

    • Denise Canela February 20, 2020 at 11:59 pm Reply

Hi Lisa – sorry to say that this is not that easy. You will need to swatch or measure as you knit. Your best bet is to find pattern for small gauge looms – like KB Looms has on their website. I wish there was an easier answer.

Denise I love your videos. Your website was the first one that came up when I was researching different patterns and it is the best and most informative on most subjects. This past summer I made hats for the preemies and this fall I made cancer hats, but I think I like your comfort dolls the most. Hi Denise, I just started getting into this hobby of loom knitting. I just completed my first hat for my daughter, and I was quite amazed I did it. I want to thank you for your youtube tutorials, and also your website, as they both came in very handy.
The hat I just finished is pretty true to size, where the yarn I used doesn’t give a lot. Is there a particular yarn you use that is good for making hats? I used a 6 weight yarn. We live in Wisconsin, so the winters here get cold. Thanks!

Hi Chris – yes you can knit a hat on a long loom. You knit flat then sew it round

    Hi Denise!

I am fairly new to loom knitting. I have made several hats, however, my bottom edge cast on always looks super loose. Is there something I am doing wrong? Or is there something I must do when I am finished to tighten that up and make it look nice and neat?

Hi Denise! I just found your videos and am completely obsessed! lol, they’re great and so easy to follow. I had a couple quick (I hope) questions… If I’m making a brimless hat but want a messy bun hole with elastic, should I be starting at the crown or “brim?” Also wondering if most am stitch can be used for a hat.
    Thank you!!

    • Denise Canela November 2, 2018 at 10:21 pm Reply

Hi Mel, welcome to the family. You can just add the elastic – I believe Isela Phelps has a messy bun video like that – and any stitch you like can be made into a hat – it all depends on the look your trying to accomplish and then you have to test, test, test (swatch). Hope that helps some

My two boys (7 and 11) have Autism and have a hard time sitting through church. I introduced them to loom knitting hats with super bulky yarn. It not only keeps their hands busy, but helps them deal with anxiety. Now we take the looms everywhere. They use them in the car and while waiting at appointments. I’m so happy to have found something productive that they enjoy. Thank you.

  23. Ann Balfour March 5, 2018 at 1:39 am Reply

Hi Denise! I have a question about newborn baby hats. At what point during the 1st year of a baby do you switch over from a 24 peg to a 31 one peg loom? The baby was born end of January and I just found out. So, I am assuming the baby is still young enough that I can use the 24 peg loom? They are long distance so I can’t measure her head and I don’t think I really want to ask her Mom to measure her baby’s head. So, thought I would ask you if you have a sense of when to start using a 31 peg loom? You stated after they are a year old, so I am thinking the 24 peg loom will work until close to a year. The baby is a girl, by the way. THANK YOU. Will wait for your reply……

    • Denise Canela March 9, 2018 at 5:51 pm Reply

Hi Ann, it really depends on the pattern design and the baby but the 24-peg is usually only for newborns. I would use the 31 pegs after the 3 month for most designs – again it depends on the baby. The Seed Stitch baby hat for instance would only fit a newborn. I have used the 36-peg for a 3 year old because of the stitch and the design which was a slouchy.

Denise, I wanted to leave a comment re the infinity scarf, but no place to leave a comment. THANK YOU for giving us an EASY infinity scarf to make. I looked and looked for MONTHS for a light scarf to make, something that could worn in the winter and then transition into Spring. I have had MULTIPLE compliments about it, how people absolutely LOVE the way it is made with the particular stitches used and how nice it lays when people wear it. I tried to get as close as I could with the yarn, but the yarn you used is no longer available and none of the yarn shops or Amazon have it and the yarn shops don’t know when or IF it will become available again. The closest I got to it was Red Heart, MONET variegated yarn. I know Red Heart can be a bit stiff, but the Monet is very soft and like I said, close to your colors. The lady I made it for said she can wear it either in the winter or spring because of the colors. The pattern is ultra EASY and I used it on the 36 peg, green loom. As always, your patterns are WINNERS and this pattern definitely is a WINNER! I know it has been chilly in FL, stay warm, should get better by next week! Take care………Ann Balfour, De Pere, WI (suburb of Green Bay).

I have some UK Double Knit Yarn. How many strands would you recommend I use? I need a reasonably tight knit as it is for a colder part of the country. I am planning on using a 36 Peg loom.

    • Denise Canela August 31, 2017 at 8:00 pm Reply

Rowena – I don’t really like using the 36-peg for an adult. As for the number of strands that really depends on the design of the hat. I strongly suggest using the larger loom and using 2 strands. Here is a design that is really warm – Click HERE

Hi. Sorry must not have explained myself properly. I am knitting for one of my nieces who is only 6. Was just wondering whether to use a 2 or 3 strand as it is a lighter weight of wool. It would be equivalent to a US 3 or light.

I recently started making hats for my kids since I have such trouble finding ones that will fit their heads. I have gone over the instructions that came with the loom set and also read through your directions above but I seem to be missing information about the anchor yarn. The yarn that is wrapped around the anchor, after it has been removed from the anchor what needs to be done with it so that the hat can be completed? Is it supposed to be folded in so that it’s closed into the brim or is it supposed to be sewn/ woven into the hat with the needle? I have quite a few hats that are finished but they can’t be washed or worn until I know what to do with the anchor string that is just hanging down at the moment. Thanks

    • Denise Canela July 9, 2017 at 10:26 pm Reply

Hi Emmalee – how you weave in the working yarn really depends on the design of the hat you are knitting. If it’s a basic hat with a fold up brim – you lay the yarn in between the fold before you knit-off. After that you would need a crochet hook to weave in the working yarn – just feed it through the loops on the inside of the hat… hope that makes sense

I was given a loom as a follow on to try to rebuild my skills after a minor stroke which limited my hand skills. Seeing your calm video has given me confidence that I can start to make useful things again and that I can start to feel useful too. The colour choice for shelter gifts is a valuable tip. For premature baby hats the yarn has to be teeny too and right away I am planning colours and seeing a future for my hands to be useful again. Small words but big meaning: thank you.

    Denise,
Thank you so much for preparing these professional quality videos for looming. Esp. showing swatches of what stitches look like when made up. i am a 10 year needle knitter and am now (anxiously) awaiting delivery of my first loom. Here’s my question: How would a person go about mounting needle knitted stitches onto a loom, and thereafter, loom knitting a project? I don’t like the looseness of the ribbing

    • Denise Canela April 21, 2017 at 7:53 pm Reply

Here is a post on how to translate a knitting pattern for the loom Click HERE

Not sure what you mean by loose ribbing – HERE is one solution is loose loops

Hi, I am nine years old. I visit your website a lot and like learning from your tutorials. So far, I have knitted four projects. But I always have this problem of getting holes in my hats going in a diagonal. Any ideas on how I can fix it? Thank You.

    • Denise Canela March 28, 2017 at 11:11 pm Reply

Hi thanks for the question – there are several ways to fix this issue and all would require a video for me to show you best. I promise to do one soon. In the meantime I will do my best with words on one method. Mark the first peg where you start your hat – that will be peg 1 – from now on every time you knit the peg next to it that we will call peg 2 – pull on the loop a little bit. That will tighten the loop on peg one.

      Hope that helps!
If you try this method I would really appreciate pictures if possible

Hi, I have just come back to looming after being away from it a long while. I found your website in a search and extremely pleased with the vast amount of information I found and also a wonderful, EASY video tutorial. I never understood why I could look at a video and understand a pattern but would have trouble reading a pattern. I seem to get overwhelmed and most times, walked away from a project. A friend of mine explained to me that it is probably because I am more of a TACTILE person which means I learn better at hands-on training than simply reading and letting my brain process it. THANK YOU so much for the video on looming, I can now go back and finish some projects I left behind. You have made it extremely easy for anyone to learn or in my case, RE-LEARN how to loom knit. haha! God Bless you, keep up the good work!

Hi, Denise, my mom and I just recently got into loom knitting, or as she calls it ‘yarning’. Her friend recently (the twenty third of Jan) had twins, and I was going to help my mom by doing up the twins some hats, but I was wondering, what’s your suggestion for the brim length? Thanks, every time we have a question we got to your channel or page.

    • Denise Canela January 28, 2017 at 4:47 pm Reply

Cassi, I don’t really like brims for babies – I prefer to let the fabric roll. If I had to choose I would say between 5/8 to an inch.

I’m just learning and can make nice hats on 36 peg loom. I want to make beanies with cable stitch that don’t roll up at the bottom. Do I need a 41 peg and knit purl to start? Or do I need a narrow guage loom? how many pegs?

    • Denise Canela January 23, 2017 at 11:30 pm Reply

Judi – as long as you do a combination of stitches like knit and purl – your fabric will not roll. As for the cable hat you can use the 41 peg but everything looks better done on a smaller gauge loom

    Dear Denise
I also make hats for charity. Some 200 + since Oct. 31, 2014. But I really like the variegated yarn. I let the yarn make the pattern. I discovered that the yarn on the bottom of the peg will show on the front of the hat while the other yarn will be inside. I discovered that if I wrap the variegated yarn around all of the pegs and then the second color my hat will have a design of its own depending on the length of each color. I have gotten a lot of “Beautifu!l” when people see my variegate hats. The batch (30) I am working on now are going to an orphan home in India. Many have gone to Operation Christmas Child. When pressed for time I will make the “pop corn” pattern, two colors and what ever color is on bottom pops up.
I have gone to my church and other civic organizations and asked if you have yarn in your closet for 10 years, may I have it. I have gotten some expensive and beautiful donated yarn that way.

    • Denise Canela October 12, 2016 at 10:28 pm Reply

      Hi Sandra,

That larger stitch is where you increase your stitches. The best way to remedy this is to pull on the loop next to that one – the second loop. When you pull on it – it will tighten the one before it. To give you an idea of what I mean watch the video on this post – it’s for a scarf but it will explain – Click HERE

By the way, i LOVE LOVE LOVE a giver – and I especially love knowing that I was somehow instrumental in the giving. Thanks for taking the time to add that to your comment. Big HUGS – You are super GREAT !!!!

    • Denise Canela January 12, 2016 at 8:23 pm Reply

That line is caused because the stitch located where you increase is a loose stitch. Every time you start a new row – pull on the loop – it will tighten the previous one. To better understand what I mean – Watch the video on this post for a scarf: Click Here

No – but depending on the stitch and the loom size – a brimless hat is ok. But again depending on the stitch the edge will roll and create a different brim you may not want.

Won’t be for a long while – in the mean time – you can knit four ears 2 white, 2 dark – sew opposites. Here is the closes I can get you to this project: Click HERE

Is there any other way to close a hat than the drawstring method that most tutorials show? I don’t like the bulky look at the top of the hat. I would like something more tapered.

    • Denise Canela October 31, 2015 at 11:12 am Reply

Yes – The Drawstring Bind-off – Click HERE.
or – Decrease the crown then close – like HERE for this one – you will see the bind-off at the end

      Hope that helps

Wow, what a great tutorial! Thank you for your clear & detailed instructions! Very easy to follow along. Can’t wait to master the basic hat so I can move on to a slouched hat and scarves!

Thank you so much. Your videos were the only way I could learn to loom knit. Thanks for taking the time to teach. I have one question. When a pattern says knit what wrap do I use?

    • Denise Canela September 26, 2015 at 11:36 am Reply

Wow Destiny – that question is harder then you think. There are 4 versions that I am aware. So normally designers use the the Classic knit – I always default to the U-wrap (it’s my favorite) but most beginners start with the e-wrap. Here is a post with a video tutorial on all four. It’s a quick video but it is VERY helpful: Click HERE

Thank you, thank you thank you so much! I never believed I could make anything. I gave up after 6 months of learning to knit & crochet. Getting the gauge accurate was so much easier on my loom. I made the beanie & it came out better then I thought. Of course there’s spots here & there where I messed up but not noticeable when I turned it to the other side. I love it & I appreciated that you took the time to make the video & that you were not a speed racer lol!! I was able to keep up. Looking forward to loom more of your projects…Sandra

Your tutorial is hands down the very BEST! Thank you so much for the time you spent making this! I have tried to learn loom knitting several times previously to no avail. Because of your video I actually made it all the way through my very first hat! It leaves a bit to be desired but I am excited to try again! I didn’t throw my loom even once HAHAHAHA! Thank you so much 🙂

Also my friend has asked if i could make a jumper for her little (very little) chihuahua im totally stuck, why cant they just have a hat and scarf and be happy with that lol any help would be greatly appreciated, i dont know where else to look and i dont want to let them down.

  94. Mary January 27, 2015 at 4:09 pm Reply

Knit (e-Warp stitch) With your hook – flip the bottom two strands over and behind the top two. Continue around the whole loom. You will be left with two strands on each peg.

** Why do I have such a hard time doing this?? (above)

Love your web site. You are so easy to watch.

Hi again Denise! I’m the one who had trouble working with two skeins (first time doing) and switched over to working with bulky. With the bulky (#5) I moved up to the yellow loom cause I figured bigger yarn, bigger loom. OMG! It’s gorgeous!!!! Am now back to working with two skeins and everything is fine. Thank you so much for your video and your guidance on how to work with a loom. Got our first snow yesterday and I proudly put on my hat and pranced around the neighborhood liked I’d been knitting all my life. Compliments were at every stop I made. Felt sooooooooo good! Thanks! Hi Denise! Well, I tried my first hat on the loom (green) with 2 skeins (reg. worsted). I found it to be very cumbersome when doing the stitches. Now…first time doing anything is a learning project. My question is can I use a “bulky” yarn instead of 2 skeins? And which bulky would you suggest? Yes, the hat came out great….love it….but want something alittle bit easier (for me) to work with. Thansk jt

    • Denise Canela January 2, 2015 at 12:34 pm Reply

YES , Chunky Yarn # 5 or Super Bulky (Chunky ) #6 work great and yes just 1 strand is a lot easier. Paton’s Shetland is my favorite – To see it – Click HERE

I am a retired senior who has just taken up loom knitting, needing something to do that did not require a large cash outlay for tools and materials. I need some help. I am doing the circle knit stitch and do not know if I am doing something wrong, or this is the way the knitting should go. i have read and watched a lot of tutorials and still have my doubts. Here is my problem…as iI do the circle knitting the “knit over loop” continues to increase in size as I go along. I do not think that is right. Is it supposed to do that? If not what do you think I am doing wrong? I would appreciate any help you could pass along, or any place I could get an answer. Thanking you in advance, and sitting here frustrated in Arizona…..Ken S.

    • Denise Canela September 1, 2014 at 12:47 pm Reply

Hi Ken, sorry for the delay in responding I’ve been ill for a bit. Just trying to catch up.

You are knitting correctly if the project is increasing in size. When you finish the hat the knitting will contract and be a normal size. Now depending on the size of your loom (not necessarily the number pegs) it will be for an adult or child. Are you using a Knifty Knitter or something like it? If yes, use my size chart to know which loom to use : Click Here

I am making my first beanie style hat on a round loom and am confused as to what to do with the small strand of yarn that I initially connected to my round loom with. I did not do a brim. Help please! 🙂

    • Denise Canela May 29, 2014 at 8:29 pm Reply

Laura, best thing to do is to get a crochet hook and weave that thread up into the inside (wrong side) of the hat.

I just finished my very first hat!!! It fits a little snug, but the length is perfect. I used the green Knifty Knitter loom and the yarn I used is Red Heart with Love in Pewter and in Waterlily. I am so proud, and it was the most fun craft I’ve ever tried. I’m ready to make a matching scarf now! Well, I need to sleep and go to church in the morning, but as soon as I get home, I’m starting my scarf!

    • Denise Canela January 12, 2014 at 11:18 am Reply

Hi Jenni, first of all congrats on your blog. Went for a peek – was there for an hour. Now I feel like we’re friends. Yes the internet is a pit we fall into to often. It keeps us from answering questions we get on our blogs. :). Anyway, I can say that I enjoyed myself. You are soooo real, love to hear that other folks with teenagers have regular homes with disaster areas. The movie and books reviews were GREAT.
Now to your hats, CONGRATS! Don’t be afraid of using the big KK yellow loom for hats. It looks scary big – but it does fit regular folk. See the Slouchy Hat post. That hat was made with an extra large loom. This is a good one to make for your kids. They’ll rise up and call you Blessed. : ).. thought you’d like that. Please send pics!

I bought the round loom kit and the scarf loom for my 11 yr old granddaughter for Christmas, she loves the child activity sets, so I bought these instead of the toy loom. She left them with me to try first, lol, I was intimidated at first but after having to redo the first 2 rows a couple of times (too tight) I got the hang if it and she may not get these back. I just wanted to tell you thanks for the easy way you teach this in the video and I hope to make lots and lots of these. Again thank you

What size loom do you generally use for adult female? The large looks huge…

    • Denise Cenela February 26, 2013 at 6:54 pm Reply

I know it does :)… But it really depends on the style of hat you plan to make and do you want it long / short, tight or loose. Also make note of the fact that although women tend to be smaller then men – we have more hair. I do use the large yellow for my bucket hats.By-the-way, my twelve year old wears them. Those are the ones you see a lot on this site. Go to the video page and you will see two of them. The green loom makes tight fit hats for adults – like the beanies. Hope that helps
