How to Loom Knit a Preemie Hat for a Baby

How to Loom Knit a Preemie Hat – Video and Picture Tutorial

Loom knit a preemie hatLearn how to Loom knit a preemie hat in minutes with a FREE pattern, video and text tutorial. Also works for newborn babies and some of the bigger dolls like American Girl. This is a very easy project and the returns are priceless. Whether you’re making the little caps for your own babies or as a gift. You will find that once you learn basic loom knitting skills you can complete one of these in less than 30 or 40 minutes.I made an easy to follow video tutorial. It will show you everything you need to know from start to finish in one short watch.

Note that I don’t knit the conventional loom knit brim for my newborn beanies. Instead  I allow the bottom to curl-up. This gives the hat the look of a loom knitted brim minus the harshness of a full double layered brim.

About The Loom: Use a Small 24-peg

Loom knit a preemie hat loom

Don’t get yourself stuck here. Any brand of small looms will work. You will see many different names , colors, shapes and  materials. I prefer the

Knifty Knitter small blue loom for a number of reasons,  none are essential to the project. I would say it’s more out of habit than anything else.

Just look for a 24-peg loom. It will work fine even if it’s a few pegs more or less.  Do not go to the next size up. The medium loom is much to big for a preemie or newborn baby.

About The Yarn: Use Baby Soft

Loom a preemie hat yarn
There is yarn for baby knitting projects called, “Baby Yarn“. Regardless of whether you’re going organic or not  all brands have a Baby Yarn version. If you’re not sure ask a sales person or look for an option on-line.

You want to make sure you don’t spend all your time knitting to then find that the baby is not happy with your gift.

Pattern: Loom Knit a Preemie Hat / Newborn Hat

Pattern Notes

Pattern based on the use of two strands of Baby Soft worsted weight yarn ( Any Brand ) . This hat is brimless

(Knot) Begin by tying or wrapping the end of your working yarn around the anchor peg on your loom. This is the 1 lonely peg on the brim of your loom. You can let it loose after you knit a row or two.

(Cast On) Going Clockwise – Wrap every peg twice (You should have 4 strands on each peg ).

Knit (E-Wrap stitch) With the Hook tool – Going Clockwise – Take the bottom two strands over the two top strands and behind the peg. Do this to all the pegs ( knit) When done that will complete 1 row. ( You should be left with two strands on each peg )

Pattern: Very Simple

Rows 1 – End : e-Wrap until you have completed 15 – 24 rows depending on the baby. See size chart

(Close Hat) Finish the hat using the gathering method.  For more information : Click here

Custom Size Your Hat: How Many Rows ?

To answer the question of how many rows of knitting I can give you a generic number such as 12 or 15. There is a method that is more customized. Here is a video to give you details.

Matching Baby Booties

If you loom knit a preemie hat: loom knit baby booties. I have also made a video for the baby booties. You can make a match. You will have to alter the pattern a bit and use the spool loom instead of the flower loom to fit the tiny feet.

I’m skimming and might have missed where it says, but how much wool do you need to make a preemie baby hat? I’m organising a service project with a youth group and I’ve asked for wool donations.

    • Denise Canela April 10, 2016 at 2:10 pm

Haven’t made this hat in a while – I would think about 60 -70 yards of worsted weight (more for baby yarn)

how do I print the tiny heart stitch pattern?

  3. sharron craner February 7, 2016 at 11:12 am

how do I print your patterns?
especially the tiny heart stitch hat
    sharron

    • Denise Canela February 8, 2016 at 8:44 am

Sharron – this site has a copy protection application. You can not copy nor print content. This is for several reasons among them – bad people who steal content. The other reason is that I sell the downloadable patterns. I had no notice that the link was missing from this page. It has now been added. Thanks for asking I’m emailing you the PDF pattern in appreciation.

    Hi there
What would the micro premmies on the sock loom as would love more info on that also what sizes would be best for blankets.

    • Denise Canela January 9, 2016 at 3:47 pm

Sally – not quite understanding the question – as for baby blankets – I believe the preference is usually 20×20 or 36×36

    Denise
I have watched your video on the preemie hat and I have been trying to make one on the Knifty Knit loom with 2 strands of baby worsted weight yarn. My problem is keeping all the stitches the same tension. When I knit off the stitches on each peg by the time I get around to the last 1 or 2 pegs the stitch end up to be bigger then the rest of the hat. When I am done with the hat everything looks good except the last 2 stitches of each round. So I have 2 lines of looser stitches that runs up and down the hat. Help what am I doing wrong. Thank You Judy

    • Denise Canela October 27, 2015 at 8:47 pm

You may need to pull on those stitches next to those two as you come around. To see what I mean watch the scarf video and you will see how I pull on the stitch next to the stitches will the problem: Click HERE

I have watched your video for looming the preemie hat. I understand you said you were using baby soft yarn 2 strands. Is the yarn normal 4 ply worsted weight yarn or is it smaller????

    Thank You
    Judy

    • Denise Canela October 22, 2015 at 8:59 pm

Yes Judy- it is 4 ply

      • Judy Byers October 27, 2015 at 10:26 am

I have trying to make the preemie hat on my Knifty knitter loom and I am having problems keeping all the stitches at the same tension. I am using 4ply yarn 2 strands as you show in the video. When you go around the loom knitting the yarn over the peg it seems like when I get around the loom to the last 1 or 2 pegs the stitches end up being bigger when I am done. When the hat is done I end up with 1 or 2 lines of looser stitches going up and down the hat. Please help what am I doing wrong??????

  7. Pat W September 9, 2015 at 3:18 pm

I have never loomed before and would like to give it a try. I have crocheted hats for the American Girl type doll and now I would like to see if I can make one with the loom. Which size loom and pattern would you suggest; and do you have a video for me to follow.

I really am glad that I found your site, and thank you for all of the different patterns.

  8. Camille Jackson March 10, 2015 at 6:50 pm

I’m finding out that most charities don’t want loomed baby hats because of the open weave. I want to loom hats for babies, so I need to know which is the best stitch and would like the video to make the hat.

    • Denise Canela March 11, 2015 at 12:08 am

Camille, You use the word “Most”. I must say that I have only read that on one site and that one accepts the hats it discourages the use of looms from passed limited experience with loom knit hats. If you use Two Strands as One when you knit with large gauge looms eWraps stitches work fine. If you don’t want to knit with two strands then it’s best to use a tighter stitch like the Garter.

    • Camille Jackson March 11, 2015 at 10:48 am

thank you Denise..I will try the garter stitch. your videos are very helpful.

  9. marie January 15, 2015 at 9:51 pm

I asked before which loom to use for a preemie, a 24 peg or a 12 peg loom.

Please respond to me at xxxxx.

I may never find my way back to this page. New at computers

    Thank you.

    • Denise Canela January 20, 2015 at 7:49 am

      Hi Marie,
Sorry for the delay… I did email you the information but just in case…. 24 peg is best for a preemie – micro preemies should be done a sock loom instead of the 12 peg loom

Hope that helps and you find your way back to my page someday.

      Hugs,
      denise

  10. Pat Ackley January 13, 2015 at 10:42 am

I have been looming for about 4 years. While caring for my stepfather I made over a hundred hats and donated them to my local health department and they in turn put some in “shoeboxes” for Christmas and gave some to mothers with small children and newborns.I recently learned how to make slippers and the e-wrap pattern is so pretty when you go back and forth and not all around the loom. Making scarves on the long looms is so great because I get almost instant gratification. Sometimes following directions is a pain because I am left-handed but I wouldn’t go back to knitting with knitting needles. Thank you for all the information you put on your site. Haven’t been to your you-tube channel but will eventually.

    • Denise Canela January 13, 2015 at 8:19 pm

Thanks Pat for all your kind words – very much appreciate them. Here is the Youtube for Samantha from Yarn Knots – she is left handed. Click HERE

  14. digi April 5, 2014 at 9:48 pm

I made your preemie hat for less than 1lb, and I made it 12 rows, but it’s not three inches, it’s only two inches. I used double stranded yarn and a 24 peg loom, what am I doing wrong?

    • Denise Canela April 5, 2014 at 11:57 pm

digi – many things factor into the end result of the knitting process including your personal style. If you knit tight – you will get a shorter hat then someone who knits loose. The true weight say two standard weight yarns (4) is not always the same if the fibers are different – natural vs synthetic or a blend. I recommend you make a small swash with the yarn you plan to use for your project to figure out how many rows YOU need for 1 inch. Read this article : Click Here

Hi – I am totally new to this and am stuck on the very first step where you start with two strings of yarn, how do you do this? Sorry so basic! :0

    • Denise Canela February 16, 2014 at 11:15 am

Hi Pam, Thank you VERY much for your question. Been needing a kick on the backside to get me moving on this. You are NOT the first person to ask me this question so I will have a full article on the subject. If you are not subscribed just be sure to return to the site by Wednesday and (God willing) you will find a txt, pic and video tutorial that will hopefully answer your question.
