Loom Knit a Beret Hat Pattern Video

How to Loom Knit a Beret Hat Flat on Any Loom

My daughter asked me to knit a beret. If you follow me on Twitter you know that I’ve been struggling with this pattern. But I’m so happy with the way it turned out. There are a few things I can brag about.

Let’s start with the fact that you can knit this baby flat. That means you can use any loom with at least 24-pegs. Yes, you can knit an adult hat on that small 24-peg loom you use to make newborn hats.  And get this, can use any shape loom. It can be long, square, rectangular or circular.

In the video and in the written pattern I explain how to enlarge the hat and how to make a wider brim.

As always, I ask that you watch the video completely before starting the project. That is especially true with this one. The knitting is not really difficult but I believe it can be confusing at first and you want to have an idea about the assembly beforehand.

Just wondering why you call the short row wedges a technique by Scarlet Royal. That technique has been around a lot longer than any of us. I used it for my own beret pattern years ago. Not trying to argue. Just curious.

It is the same technique used for any of the circular blankets that are knit using short row wedges. I can give you the list of just loom knitting patterns that have used that, not counting needle patterns, if you like.

I love your beret pattern but just wondering…

Thank you, Denise, for all you do to educate people in loom knitting.

Hi Renita – first I have GREAT respect for you. Thank YOU for all you have contributed to this community and I think it’s so cool that you watched my video. I totally understand what you’re saying but I learned the technique from a video by Scarlett. She made a round blanket for a lovey and that was the technique I used. After watching that I got the idea for the beret. I searched for loom knitting beret videos to make sure I didn’t copy anyone. I only found 2 of them – Scarlett and Tuteate. My pattern was different so I went with it. I count on the information given to me by Google and YouTube exclusively. When I’m using very basic techniques commonly used, I don’t attribute the information to anyone – like most cast-on , Garter stitch, Rib stitch or most bind-off (unless I know the original creator).

Thank you for replying! I too have a beret pattern using short rows the Candy Stripe Beret and Isela Phelps has a beret pattern as well using short rows.. Both were on the KB Loom site, but I am in the process of doing something else with mine so the pattern is still on Ravelry but not available at this time.

Noting where you learned a technique is not the same as giving that person credit for developing the technique which is what you appeared to do which is why I asked. I knew you hadn’t copied anyone’s specific pattern. Just wondering about giving credit for the technique as opposed to where you learned it.

You might want to include Ravelry in your search parameters if mine and Isela’s beret patterns didn’t show on the Google search since not all patterns are on YouTube.

Thank you again for the compliment! It means a lot to me. And I am always available for support!
